With the Great Resignation underway, there are more work-site choices for the independent worker than ever. You may opt to sit in coffee hangs as I do, or perhaps a coworking situation fits you best. Some people need to be more social than others. There are people, though, that see commotion as a distraction. You choose.
1. Ambient Noise — Some people are skilled at shutting out the barista antics behind the bar and the chatter at coffee hangs, while others may find it annoying. Find a tolerable noise level and get to work.
2. Lightin’ Up — Eye strain may lead to less productive work hours. Find a place that’s well-lit.
3. Oh, My Back! — Being comfortable is vital. Some people go for the soft couches, while others migrate to the high tops. No, I’m not talking about Nike or Converse.
4. Creative Environment — What makes a creative work environment is up to you. I know that a pleasant workspace lends one to be creative.
5. Productivity — Freelancing can be, at times, quite demanding. Freelancers need to be self-starters and disciplined about starting their day. Decide what needs to be accomplished before heading to the beach or hopping on the mountain bike.
6. Coworking — Working alongside other creatives can spark new ideas, help solve nagging problems, or lead to partnering situations. Think about coworking to accelerate your freelance hustle.
7. Privacy — You never know who’s listening to your conversations. You need to protect your confidential information and that of your clients. Make sure things are secure before settling into your spot.
8. Life Support System — If you need to make a list to start, so be it — a backpack, power cords, pens, pencils, notebook, laptop, external hard drive, headphones, power bar, water bottle, etc.
It took me a while to remember what supplies to stash in my kit before heading out for the day. I hope this list is a catalyst to preparing you for a fantastic freelancing day.
