66: Let Scripture Set the Direction of Your Life

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Simply reading the Bible isn’t the goal. Plenty of men know Scripture without allowing Scripture to know them. The trail changes when two men sit down, open God’s Word together, and give it permission to examine both their lives. That’s where transformation begins.

Paul reminds Timothy that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable…” (2 Timothy 3:16). Notice the emphasis isn’t on gathering information but on allowing God’s Word to teach, correct, expose, and train us. Those are not comfortable words. They describe a process that reshapes a man’s heart before it ever changes his circumstances.

Too often we approach the Bible looking for quick answers to today’s problems. We search for encouragement, a promise, or a principle to make life easier. Yet discipleship asks a different question: “What is God changing in me?” That question requires humility, patience, and the willingness to stay on the trail even when the path leads through conviction before comfort.

The strongest disciples aren’t those with the most Bible knowledge. They are the men who consistently place themselves beneath the authority of God’s Word and allow it to direct every step they take.

Walking through Scripture with another man creates accountability that private reading alone often cannot. Someone else notices what you overlook. They ask questions you would rather avoid. They encourage you when obedience feels costly and remind you of God’s promises when discouragement clouds your vision. God’s Word becomes more than something you read. It becomes the map both of you agree to follow.

This is why healthy discipleship always keeps the Bible open. Conversations matter. Personal experiences have value. Wise counsel is important. But none of those carry the authority that belongs to God’s Word. The trail isn’t defined by our opinions or preferences. It is marked by the truth God has already spoken.

Every time two men gather around Scripture, they acknowledge that neither of them is the final authority. Christ is. His Word settles direction, exposes wandering hearts, and points both men back toward faithful obedience. That posture quietly changes every conversation.

Open the Bible expecting more than information. Expect correction. Expect encouragement. Expect God to reveal areas where your heart has drifted. Then respond with obedience. Over time, those ordinary moments around an open Bible become the steady miles that shape a faithful disciple. The trail grows clearer because God’s voice becomes louder than your own.

Live it out

This week, meet with another believer and open God’s Word together. Read a passage slowly, ask what it reveals about God and your own heart, and commit to one act of obedience before you leave. The trail becomes clearer when Scripture leads every conversation and every step you take together.
