24: Secure, Not Striving: Walking Rooted in Christ

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” — Colossians 2:6–7

Striving is often seen as dedication. Men are praised for it, and ministries are fueled by it. It’s expected. But beneath the surface, striving reveals insecurity more than devotion.

Colossians 2:6–7 calls men to be rooted in Christ: “As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up.” The same grace that saved you sustains you.

Good intentions slowly drift into striving. Men start measuring growth by endurance, visibility, or recognition. On the trail, striving sounds laudable—never settled, never at rest, keep pushing.

Men whose walk is rooted in Christ pace themselves differently. Their identity is anchored in their Savior. Security in Christ produces endurance because it removes the need to prove belonging.

Storms test a rooted disciple, but they don’t define him. Striving exhausts because it depends on oneself. Security strengthens because it depends on Christ.

And until a man learns the difference, he’ll keep confusing movement with spiritual maturity along the miles he’s been entrusted to walk faithfully.

application

Security in Christ reshapes how a man handles both growth and hardship. He no longer panics during slow seasons. Colossians 2:6–7 reminds him that depth matters more than pace.

Quiet seasons are sometimes seen as failure instead of development. On the trail, this often leads men to overextend—filling their schedules with roles, and expectations God never assigned.

But security produces discernment. This security also transforms resilience. Trials don’t shake identity; they reinforce dependence. Roots grow deepest in difficult times.

Striving fades. Security endures. A rooted disciple keeps walking decade after decade because his strength is sourced beneath the surface, not manufactured above it where appearances once drove his sense of worth.

Live it out

Pay attention to your pace this week. Notice where urgency is driving you more than obedience. Slow your walk enough to ask: Am I rooted or rushing?

Spend unhurried time with Christ—not to accomplish something, but to deepen connection. Let Colossians 2:6–7 reframe your growth. Depth over speed. Stability over visibility.

When pressure rises, return to your Root instead of increasing effort. Security grows in stillness as much as movement.
